Dorkus Malorkus beats PhiLeep in family finals matchup
"Dorkus Malorkus"
Josh Greenauer & Bob Greenauer
As with the previous Winter Klassic, regular season play featured all teams competing in the famous "scramble" format in games to 11. The top 12 teams qualified for the playoffs. For the first round of the playoffs, the top 4 teams received a "bye." Dorkus Malorkus (Josh & Bob Greenauer) and PhiLeep (Phil Schneider & LeeAnn Greenauer) both finished the regular season with a record of 29-2. Since Dorkus won the head-to-head matchup, they took the number one seed position. The third place spot belonged to Sole Survivors (Eric Klavoon & Steve Wojcik) at 26-5, and the other bye team at 25-6 was Physical Graffiti (Nick Engl & Sean Curry). There was also a three-way tie for the final two spots in the playoffs between Se7en (Brandon Siclari & Keith Dubuque), The Channel 4 News Team (Josh Tonn & Mike Andrews), and Pic & Bic (Tim Bicknell & Mike Gerken). Based on head-to-head performance, Pic & Bic just missed the playoff group.

Dorkus Malorkus and Physical Graffiti swept their series in the Quarter-finals, winning three games to none against their counterparts. Dorkus defeated Se7en and Physical Graffiti took down last year’s runners-up, Little Lebowski Urban Achievers. Likewise, the other two matches went to a deciding game five. PhiLeep won the series in their first playoff matchup against Team Rebels. In the remaining matchup, Sole Survivors squared up against Formidable Baby Crushers for the third consecutive Kan Jam tournament. In a competitive battle that featured a double perfect game and a 5-overtime game, Sole Survivors defeated their counterparts to advance to the final four of the Winter Klassic for the fourth time.
"PhiLeep"
Phil Schneider & LeeAnn Greenauer
In the final four, PhiLeep and Sole Survivors started game one with a double perfect game through the first three overtime rounds. Sole Survivors stayed perfect through the fourth overtime round to win game 1. However, PhiLeep maintained consistency, winning the next four games, including three in overtime. By doing so, PhiLeep advanced to the finals for the first time ever. Physical Graffiti proved themselves as a top competitor in their first Winter Klassic in the series against Dorkus Malorkus. On the verge of a potential game 7, Dorkus nailed a much needed deuce to move on to the finals.
For the first time ever, the finals would feature a family battle - the father-son pairing of Dorkus Malorkus would take on their daughter/sister, LeeAnn and nephew/cousin, Phil of PhiLeep. After falling behind in the series three games to one, PhiLeep won game 5 to extend the series. Dorkus Malorkus would hold on to win game 6 to clinch their third consecutive Winter title and fourth overall in the six year history of the tournament.
Other notable milestones include five consecutive appearances in the finals by Dorkus. LeeAnn Greenauer (PhiLeep) records the highest seed in the regular season by a female (#2 seed). In addition, she becomes only the second female to make it to the finals and first to win a game in the finals. Sole Survivors throw 25 consecutive buckets in the playoffs.
The 2009 Kan Jam Winter Klassic was a fundraiser for “Carly’s Club.” Special thanks to Paul Swisher, Eric Klavoon & Klavoon family, Kim Daugherty, Bob Bowers, and the staff at the Sahlen’s Sports Park for making this event a success.
